Župa sv. Barbare u Jakšiću osnovana je uredbom od 29. travnja 1789. godine. Građenje prve župne crkve, na mjestu kapele, započeto je 1779. godine.
Od tada kroz povijest župe nekoliko je puta stara jakšićka crkva bila popravljana, dograđivana i ponovno građena. Cijela jakšićka župa, a posebno samo sjedište župe nalazi se na vrlo lijepom položaju.

Kako su u ove krajeve doseljavali novi stanovnici, a crkva postajala sve skučenijom župna crkva sv. Barbare morala se stalno proširivati, sve do današnjeg izgleda.
Sv. Barbara je zaštitnica rudara, dobre smrti i protiv groma i vatre. Jedna je od 14 svetaca pomoćnika u nevoljama.
