The cathedral and the episcopal court are among the most important monuments of neo-Byzantine architecture in Croatian historicism. The cathedral, originally a Baroque building, was restored between 1893 and 1896 according to the designs of Herman Bollé when it was given its present appearance and interior furnishings.
The monumental iconostasis in the interior is the work of Zagreb carpenters, and the execution of the icons themselves was entrusted to Serbian painters Stevan Todorović and Živko Jugović. The iconostasis disappeared in the last war, as did most of the rest of the interior equipment.
