KATEDRALA SV. TEREZIJE AVILSKE
Trg Sv. Terezije 3, Požega, Hrvatska

Vanjski i unutrašnji izgled katedrale odišu elegancijom i harmonijom baroknoga graditeljstva.

CATHEDRAL OF ST. TERESA OF AVILA
Sv. Terezije Square 3, Požega, Croatia

The exterior and interior of the cathedral exude the elegance and harmony of Baroque architecture. Bishop Franjo Thauzy of Zagreb had special merits for the construction.
Bishop Thauzy first bought the old burg of Požega, and then received permission from empress Maria Theresa to build a parish church that will bear the name of its patron saint, St. Theresa of Avila.
The construction of the church took place from 1756 to 1763 when it was consecrated by bishop Thauzy. Their merits are witnessed by a stone plaque above the entrance door to the church with an engraved inscription from 1763.

The interior of the cathedral is decorated in the late Baroque or Rococo style. Bishop Thauzy donated a monumental main altar which, between wooden marbled pillars, is adorned with a painting of St. Theresa by an unknown author.
At the suggestion of Miroslav Kraljević, and as part of the celebration of the hundredth anniversary of its construction, the Cathedral was thoroughly renovated, and from 1863 until today it has undergone several renovations.

In 2013, in the crypt of the Požega Cathedral, the chapel of the Blessed John Paul II was blessed and opened. in which there is also a statue of pope John Paul II, the work of the academic sculptor Marija Ujević Galetović.
